Best Family SUVs in 2026: Seating, Safety, and Fuel Costs

Start with Santa Fe Hybrid for seven-seat efficiency, Palisade Hybrid for larger-family seating, and Pilot for its removable second-row middle seat on specified trims. Highlander lets you compare gas and hybrid power in a standard-AWD lineup. The new Telluride Hybrid adds a 35-mpg FWD option with seven- or eight-seat configurations.

This comparison uses published U.S. specifications and safety information checked November 2, 2026. Telluride Hybrid is a 2027 model sold during calendar 2026; the other choices are 2026 models. Bring your child restraints and normal luggage to the appointment so the seating choice reflects the trips you actually make.

Match the vehicle to the seating job

Before comparing trims, write down your busiest ordinary trip: the number of adults and children, which restraints they use, whether someone must reach the third row, and what cargo remains aboard.

CandidatePublished configuration detailReason to consider it
2026 Hyundai Palisade HybridSeven or eight seats depending on configuration; hybrid FWD and AWD versionsCompare larger-family seating with hybrid fuel use
2026 Hyundai Santa Fe HybridThree rows standard, with seating for up to sevenA hybrid alternative when eight seats are unnecessary
2026 Toyota HighlanderGas and hybrid powertrains; AWD standard on bothCompare two powertrain choices within the same model
2026 Honda PilotEight seats on most trims; TrailSport has sevenRemovable second-row middle seat on specified trims
2027 Kia Telluride HybridSeven- or eight-passenger configurationsA newer hybrid option that requires careful model-year matching

Choose the seating arrangement before choosing an appearance package. Captain’s chairs may improve access for your family but reduce the number of available seating positions. A bench may retain an extra position while making access less convenient with child restraints installed.

Palisade Hybrid: compare FWD and AWD fuel use

Hyundai’s 2026 Palisade Hybrid page lists a starting MSRP of $44,160, excluding freight, taxes and other charges. The hybrid combines a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with electric assistance for 329 horsepower.

Fuel economy depends on the version. Hyundai lists 34 mpg combined for the Blue SEL and SEL Premium FWD configurations, 31 mpg for Limited and Calligraphy FWD, and 29 mpg for the listed AWD hybrid configurations. These are EPA estimates.

Choose a 34-mpg Blue SEL or SEL Premium FWD when fuel economy and its seating layout meet your needs. For AWD, use 29 mpg in the budget. Check the seat configuration and included equipment on the exact vehicle before deciding whether a higher trim is worth the price.

Santa Fe Hybrid: a standard third row

The 2026 Santa Fe Hybrid comes with three rows. Hyundai describes seating for up to seven and available second-row captain’s chairs.

Its EPA combined estimates are 36 mpg with front-wheel drive and 34 mpg with all-wheel drive for the listed hybrid trims. That makes it worth comparing when fuel use matters and an eight-passenger configuration is unnecessary.

Position the second row for its usual passengers, try the third row, then load the stroller and bags with all needed seats upright. This checks the space available on a fully occupied family trip.

Highlander: gas and hybrid both remain available

Toyota’s 2026 Highlander announcement lists four gas grades and three hybrid grades, with AWD standard across the lineup. It gives manufacturer-estimated combined figures of 24 mpg for gas and 35 mpg for hybrid versions.

The hybrid produces 243 net combined horsepower and can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. Eight-seat bench configurations are available on gas or hybrid XLE and gas Limited; other listed configurations use seven-seat layouts with captain’s chairs.

The standard assistance suite is Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+. Equipment names and powertrain availability should be checked against the 2026 vehicle, especially when a dealer also advertises a different model year.

Pilot: seating flexibility with a V6

Honda’s 2026 Pilot specification sheet lists a 285-horsepower V6 and 10-speed automatic transmission. EPA combined ratings are 22 mpg for 2WD trims, 21 mpg for non-TrailSport AWD trims and 20 mpg for TrailSport.

The EX-L, Touring, Elite and Black Edition have a removable second-row middle seat. TrailSport uses captain’s chairs and seats seven; the other listed trims seat eight.

Honda lists 18.6 cubic feet behind the third row as the standard cargo measurement. Compare that with another SUV’s seats-up figure, then check the shape and height of the load area with your own luggage.

Telluride Hybrid: use the 2027 specifications

Kia’s 2027 Telluride Hybrid overview identifies this as the first Telluride generation with an available hybrid. The EX FWD has an EPA combined estimate of 35 mpg, and the hybrid system produces up to 329 horsepower.

Kia lists the 2027 Telluride Hybrid EX FWD at $46,490 before destination and other charges in its pricing table. Start with this trim when you want the hybrid’s 35-mpg rating and a larger three-row layout.

Record the full model year, trim, and powertrain on your comparison sheet. This keeps the new 2027 hybrid separate from remaining 2026 V6 inventory when comparing prices, seating, and fuel use.

Safety awards can depend on the build date

The IIHS 2026 award list includes these relevant distinctions:

VehicleAward shownQualification to retain
2026–27 Hyundai PalisadeTop Safety Pick+Built after November 2025
2026–27 Hyundai Santa FeTop Safety Pick+Confirm the exact model’s rating page
2027 Kia TellurideTop Safety Pick+Built after June 2026

For Pilot and Highlander, examine the individual IIHS test results; neither appears on the 2026 award list checked for this guide. For Palisade and Telluride, confirm that the door-jamb production date meets the award restriction.

Read the detailed Palisade rating or Telluride rating for the tested configuration, crash results, headlights, and crash-avoidance performance.

Check child-restraint fit in the actual seats

NHTSA’s car-seat guidance explains how to match the restraint to the child and vehicle. Follow both manuals for installation methods, anchor locations, and height or weight limits. Check lower-anchor positions and top-tether anchors separately because they serve different functions.

NHTSA recommends a top tether with a forward-facing restraint when both manufacturers permit it. It also advises keeping children in the back seat at least through age 12. Its inspection-station finder can help you locate a technician.

Install the intended restraints during your vehicle appointment. Check buckle access, space behind the front occupants, and the path to the third row. Use the actual restraint models and seating positions your family will need.

Calculate the hybrid savings before paying a premium

Using the published combined MPG figures above, these are annual fuel costs at 15,000 miles and an assumed $3.50 per gallon:

Combined fuel economyAnnual gallonsAnnual fuel cost
24 mpg625.00$2,187.50
29 mpg517.24$1,810.34
34 mpg441.18$1,544.12
35 mpg428.57$1,500.00

Highlander’s 24-mpg gas and 35-mpg hybrid estimates produce a $687.50 annual saving, or $3,437.50 over five years, at these mileage and fuel-price inputs. Compare that saving with the actual difference between equivalent gas and hybrid quotes, then add financing, insurance, and expected ownership costs.

Choose Santa Fe Hybrid when its seven-seat cabin fits the family; consider Palisade Hybrid when you need an eight-seat configuration or prefer its layout. Pilot is the useful seating-flexibility alternative, while Highlander provides a direct gas-versus-hybrid comparison. Before buying, compare warranties and maintenance schedules.
