Hyundai Ioniq 5 vs Tesla Model Y 2026: EV Crossover Comparison

Choose the Ioniq 5 if wireless CarPlay/Android Auto and its cabin layout matter most, especially when your routes offer suitable high-power CCS charging. Choose the Model Y Premium RWD if you prioritize longer rated range, lower electricity consumption, and Tesla charging integration. Compare the extended-range rear-drive versions first, then decide whether you need AWD.

U.S. specifications and service prices checked November 3, 2026. Prices below identify the trim and exclude the stated taxes and fees.

Match the range figure to the trim

Hyundai’s 2026 specifications give these EPA-estimated ranges:

2026 Ioniq 5 configurationEPA-estimated range
SE Standard Range RWD245 miles
SE, SEL or Limited RWD with extended-range battery318 miles
SE or SEL AWD290 miles
Limited AWD269 miles
XRT AWD259 miles

The EPA lists the 2026 Model Y Long Range at 357 miles RWD and 327 miles AWD; these correspond to the range figures used for the Premium configurations in this comparison. Match the rating to the inventory vehicle’s window sticker. EPA Model Y configurations, Hyundai specifications.

The 357-mile Model Y estimate exceeds the extended-range Ioniq 5 RWD’s by 39 miles. Allow a larger reserve on cold or high-speed trips and compare planned charging stops for both vehicles.

Choose RWD or AWD for your routes before comparing prices. On the Ioniq 5, SE AWD is rated for 290 miles while Limited AWD is rated for 269 miles. Evaluate the Limited’s extra equipment alongside that range difference.

Compare prices before incentives and fees

Hyundai’s October 1, 2025 pricing announcement set the 2026 SE Standard Range RWD at $35,000, SE RWD at $37,500, and SE AWD at $41,000, excluding its stated $1,600 freight charge, tax, title and license fees. Adding freight produces $36,600, $39,100 and $42,600, respectively, before those other charges. These are manufacturer reference prices, not promises of dealer inventory or transaction price. Hyundai Motor America pricing release.

The SE RWD therefore costs $2,500 more than Standard Range at those base prices and carries a 73-mile larger EPA estimate. Compare that difference with your actual journeys: a household that routinely drives farther between available charging stops has a different reason to buy range than one driving 30 miles daily with home charging.

Obtain Tesla’s cash order total for the exact drivetrain, wheels, options and inventory vehicle. Compare that with the Hyundai’s written out-the-door quote. Neither an estimated fuel saving nor a monthly payment is the vehicle’s purchase price.

Do not subtract a federal $7,500 credit from a newly acquired vehicle in November 2026. The IRS says the new, used and qualified commercial clean-vehicle credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Assembly location alone does not revive the credit. A manufacturer discount is a separate offer. IRS clean vehicle credits.

The Ioniq 5’s charging time depends on the station

Hyundai specifies approximately 20 minutes from 10% to 80% on suitable high-power 800-volt DC equipment with the included CCS adapter. Check station voltage and output in the route plan; the vehicle’s charging rate changes during a session.

For compatible NACS charging, Hyundai quotes approximately 24 minutes for the 63-kWh Standard Range battery and 30 minutes for the 84-kWh battery under its stated conditions. The 2026 vehicle has a native NACS port; it does not need a Tesla-to-vehicle adapter at a compatible Supercharger. The CCS adapter serves the other connector arrangement. Hyundai 2026 charging information.

For the extended-range Ioniq 5, plan around the quoted 20-minute CCS or 30-minute NACS interval for the equipment you expect to use. Battery temperature, starting charge, and station output can lengthen the stop.

Tesla lists a 250-kW Supercharging maximum for Model Y Premium. Its advertised miles added in 15 minutes is a different measure from Hyundai’s 10–80% interval, so those figures cannot establish a precise head-to-head charging-time winner. Tesla specifications.

Check the charging stops you will actually use

Check Tesla’s map for sites compatible with each car, including Tesla-only, Magic Dock, and supported-manufacturer NACS locations. Tesla charging access guidance.

Map two frequent long trips and identify compatible stops, alternatives and amenities. A faster advertised charging session is less useful if it requires a long detour. Check whether a station’s cable can reach the charge port while the vehicle occupies its intended space.

The EPA rates the extended-range Ioniq 5 RWD at 30 kWh/100 miles, including charging losses. A 40-mile day therefore calls for about 12 kWh from the supply, or roughly 1.7 hours at a steady 7.2 kW. Price the electrical installation and check the actual available parking time. EPA Ioniq 5 rating

Compare useful cabin features in person

The 2026 Ioniq 5 specification lists a 12.3-inch touchscreen and standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Its sliding and reclining rear seats are worth trying with your actual passengers and cargo. Hyundai equipment table.

Bring the items that decide vehicle fit: a stroller, mobility aid, child seat or regular luggage. Check the space with passengers seated and with the rear seats folded. Published cargo figures can use different included compartments, so one headline number should not replace this exercise.

Hyundai offers vehicle-to-load capability with specified equipment. Its stated limits include a 20% battery cutoff and appliances drawing under 16 amps. Check those requirements and the appliance load before using it. Hyundai V2L terms.

Try climate, navigation, and driver-assistance controls while parked, then drive comparable roads. Choose the seat, ride, and control layout you can comfortably use every day.

Budget driver assistance as an optional service

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) support page lists a $99 monthly subscription. Twelve months at that price is $1,188, before applicable tax. Tesla explicitly says the system requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous. Tesla subscription terms.

Remain attentive and ready to take control while using either vehicle’s assistance features. Identify which functions are standard, which need a subscription, and when any included trial ends.

Use a household cost calculation to decide

Obtain insurance quotes for both VINs, a home-installation quote, and electricity prices for your expected charging mix. Add these to the delivered vehicle prices and finance offers.

For 12,000 miles annually, EPA consumption rounded to one decimal gives the Ioniq 5 RWD 3,600 kWh and the Model Y Long Range RWD 3,024 kWh. With 80% of charging at a price input of $0.18/kWh and 20% at $0.50/kWh, annual electricity costs $878.40 and $737.86, respectively. Replace these rate inputs with your tariffs. EPA comparison

The Model Y wins this rear-drive comparison on rated range and electricity consumption. Choose the Ioniq 5 when its phone integration, cabin, purchase quote, and CCS stops make the better everyday package.
